SCARBOROUGH SWIMMING CLUB

We welcome and encourage you and your family to come along and see if Scarborough Swimming Club is for you and offer everyone two free sessions. Occasionally we run link sessions, which are a chance for you to sample our swim teaching if you are currently in a learn to swim programme with Everyone Active or anyone else - please ask for more details or advice if you’re not sure which sessions may suit you best.

COMPETITIVE SWIMMING

All our coaches and teachers are passionate about swimming and supporting, motivating and caring about athletes in their development as swimmers and people.

Some have been successful competitive swimmers or athletes themselves and most are volunteers choosing to support the club and swimmers because of their love of both the sport and supporting the growth and improvement of swimmers.

They will always aim to inspire, communicate honestly and appropriately and listen well. All have appropriate training and qualifications and are committed to the ongoing development of their skills and knowledge to continue engaging and encouraging our athlete’s belief in themselves.

SQUADS

Coaches regularly discuss progression of swimmers but please speak to your coach if you feel there should be a progression that isn’t happening or a swimmer would prefer to be with a different coach. Movement between squads can happen at any time but will mostly be towards the end of the year as age groups change.

All squads will cover the following basics:

• Work to annual coaching plans devised as part of a 4 year program
• Develop and improve stroke technique on all four competitive strokes
• Learn basic stroke drill progressions for all four competitive strokes.
• Monitor own training progressions by regular timed test swims and goal setting
• Swim Individual Medley (IM) swimming sets
• Learn and perfect starts, turns and finishes on all four competitive strokes and IMs
• Learn and perfect relay changeovers
• Independently monitor training pace using the pace clocks
• Learn the rules of the sport
• Gradually increase the distance covered in training sessions to improve endurance
• Participate in club time trials, performing a variety of strokes and distances
• Participate in local open meets and annual club meets
• Learn the process of goal setting and working towards objectives
• Learn to keep a record of competition results
• Learn and practice basic stretching, body-weight and core strength exercises
• Take responsibility for ensuring own swim equipment/clothing is present at sessions
• Be set timely achievement goals either as an individual or a group
• Encouraged to set own goals regularly
